Ages 15–18 · The Method

U16 & U18 Soccer Drills

The senior game is measured in details. Six sessions on high-intensity pressing, tactical structure, and finishing under real match pressure — training for the level above.

Session length: 90–105 minutes. Activation · tactical block · game-based drill · 11v11 finish.

Drill 01

Counter-Press (6 Seconds)

Set-up
8v8 on 40×30m pitch. When possession is lost, the losing team has 6 seconds to win it back before dropping into shape.
Focus
Immediate reaction to loss, collective pressing, discipline to drop.
Coaching points
First man closes the ball. Second and third cut passing lanes. Six seconds or drop.
Progression
Shorten to 4 seconds. Add a rule: winning it back = 2 points.

Drill 02

Third-Man Combinations

Set-up
6v4 in a 30×25m grid. Objective: score via a third-man combination through the middle third.
Focus
Recognising third-man patterns, timing runs, disguising passes.
Coaching points
Third man moves before the ball reaches the second man. Play in front of the runner.
Progression
Add a fifth defender. Only third-man goals count.

Drill 03

Overload → Isolation

Set-up
11v11 on full pitch. Rule: build on one side, must switch to the winger on the far side in 1v1.
Focus
Manipulating the opponent's shape, quality of switch, 1v1 attacking.
Coaching points
Draw them in with short passes, then hit the switch. Winger — receive on the back foot and attack.
Progression
Time limit to complete the switch. Points for a successful 1v1 cross.

Drill 04

Set-Piece Routines

Set-up
Attacking corners and free kicks. Full defensive setup with keeper.
Focus
Executing rehearsed routines, timing of runs, delivery quality.
Coaching points
Trust the pattern. Every runner has a job — do yours, trust the others.
Progression
Add a defensive counter — score bonus points for defending a resulting counter.

Drill 05

Finishing Under Fatigue

Set-up
Striker sprints 20m, receives a pass, takes on a defender, finishes. Repeat 6 times with 30-second recovery.
Focus
Composure under fatigue, quality of finish, decision-making tired.
Coaching points
Head still. Pick your corner. Same technique tired as fresh.
Progression
Reduce recovery time. Vary the finish type (feet, head, volley).

Drill 06

11v11 Phase Play

Set-up
Full pitch, 11v11. Coach starts the ball in different phases: goal-kick, midfield, final third.
Focus
Applying tactical principles across every phase of the match.
Coaching points
Every phase has a picture — recognise it, execute the plan, adjust as it evolves.
Progression
Freeze play to teach. Add specific match scenarios (leading late, chasing a goal).
