Ages 11–12 · The Method

U12 Soccer Drills

At U12, speed of play becomes the differentiator. Six sessions on scanning, first-touch direction, and finishing patterns that transfer straight into weekend matches.

Session length: 75–90 minutes. Warm-up · technical block · game-based drill · 7v7 or 9v9 finish.

Drill 01

Scan & Pass

Set-up
4 players in a 12×12m box. Passer must shout the shirt number of a coach-held cone before receiving.
Focus
Scanning before receiving, first-touch direction, communication.
Coaching points
Look over your shoulder twice before the pass arrives. First touch already faces where you're playing.
Progression
Add a passive defender. Reduce to one touch.

Drill 02

Pressing Traps

Set-up
6v3 in a 20×15m grid. Defenders trigger a press when the ball is played backwards.
Focus
Recognising press triggers, defending as a unit, forcing play wide.
Coaching points
Press together, arrive together. Cut off the inside, force them wide.
Progression
Change trigger to a heavy touch. Defenders rotate every 90 seconds.

Drill 03

Finishing Combinations

Set-up
Half pitch. Winger crosses, striker attacks near post, second striker back post. Keeper in goal.
Focus
Timing of runs, cross quality, decisive finishing.
Coaching points
Attack the ball, don't wait for it. Near post = flick, back post = header down.
Progression
Add a defender to mark. Vary crosses (low, high, cutback).

Drill 04

Switch of Play 6v6

Set-up
30×20m pitch split into two zones. 6v6 with points for switching zones with a first-time pass.
Focus
Recognising when to switch, receiving on the back foot, quality of long pass.
Coaching points
Switch when the picture is set — weight it so the defender can't recover.
Progression
3 passes required before a switch. Bonus for switching first-time.

Drill 05

Counter-Attack Waves

Set-up
3 attackers vs 2 defenders + keeper, then reset with 4v3, then 5v4. Fast transitions.
Focus
Decision speed, running with the ball, quick finish before recovery.
Coaching points
Play forward first. If forward's off, keep it and drive. Finish in 6 seconds or less.
Progression
Add a recovering defender. Cap possession time.

Drill 06

7v7 Conditioned Game

Set-up
40×25m pitch, 7v7 with keepers. Rule: goal must be scored within 8 seconds of winning the ball.
Focus
Transition speed, quick decisions, applying the session in a game.
Coaching points
Turn the ball forward first. Support the ball-carrier immediately.
Progression
Shorten the timer. Add an offside line.
