Soccer Passing Drills

Passing is where the AM Method shows itself most clearly. Weight, angle, and timing — the three details that turn a rehearsed pattern into a real match action.

Session length: 45–75 minutes depending on age. Pair with an age-specific block from U8 or U10.

Drill 01

Y-Pattern Passing

Set-up
Three players in a Y-shape, 10m apart. Ball starts at the base and moves through the pattern; players rotate to the position they passed to.
Focus
Body shape before receiving, first touch across the body, weight of pass.
Coaching points
Open before you receive. First touch out of your feet toward the next pass — not straight at yourself.
Progression
Add a second ball. Add a rule: two-touch only. Increase the distance.

Drill 02

Third-Man Combination

Set-up
Three players in a line 8m apart. A passes to B, B lays off to C, who plays a forward pass into the space A runs into.
Focus
Third-man movement, timing of runs, disguising the intended pass.
Coaching points
The third man is already moving before the ball reaches the second man. Play the pass in front of the runner.
Progression
Add a passive defender on B. Combine at match speed.

Drill 03

Diamond Rotation

Set-up
Four players in a diamond, 10m sides. Pass around the diamond, then follow your pass to the next position.
Focus
First touch angles, passing rhythm, communication.
Coaching points
Every pass has a name. First touch opens the next pass — don't stop it dead.
Progression
Reverse direction on call. One-touch only. Add a rondo defender in the middle.

Drill 04

Switch of Play

Set-up
Two 15×10m boxes joined by a middle channel. 4v2 in each box; when the ball is switched, defenders sprint across.
Focus
Long passing accuracy, decision to switch, receiving on the half-turn.
Coaching points
Switch when the picture is set. Weight it firm enough that the defender can't recover.
Progression
Limit touches. Add a rule: switch must be a first-time pass off a set-up touch.

Drill 05

Wall-Pass Gates

Set-up
A passes to a wall (B), receives the return, and dribbles through a gate. Three gates spread across an area.
Focus
Wall-pass timing, angle of the return, exploiting space after the combination.
Coaching points
Attack the wall at pace. The return pass goes into the space, not to the feet.
Progression
Live defender who reacts on the first pass. Choice of two walls.

Drill 06

6v6 Possession + Target Player

Set-up
20×20m grid, 6v6 with a floating target player for the team in possession. Target must be found once per possession.
Focus
Passing under pressure, using a target to relieve pressure, receiving to play.
Coaching points
Find the target's back foot when they're marked. Support the target — first pass back is always on.
Progression
Two targets. Switch of play rule: 5 passes and a target touch = 1 point.
